Welcome to the Art Department
Introduction
This is a lively Art department occupying three light and airy rooms on the top floor of the School, overlooking the Heath. Our doors are open at lunchtime and after school for students to work on coursework and individual projects. We hope that the curriculum across the years from 7 to 11 reflects London’s rich historical and contemporary art environments.

Successful artist-in-residence projects over the past three years have helped us to enrich the curriculum and the visual environment of the school.

Aims of the Department

1.  We aim to promote personal experience through the making and understanding of art.

2.
We recognise that our School is made up of pupils and staff from a range of different communities and backgrounds, and we construct projects and activities that reflect and encourage the rich diversity of cultures of our School.

3.
Pupils should have the opportunity of gaining experience in a wide range of media including paint, print, sculpture and electronic media.

4.
The Department acknowledges the importance of contemporary art and design and of establishing the role of art in the worlds of work, recreation and aesthetic appreciation.

5.
We aim to strengthen pupils’ ability to concentrate on tasks, to work as a member of a group and to respect the strengths and ideas of others.

6.
The Department aims to develop control of a wide range of media in relation to the formal elements of art, extending the abilities of the gifted and giving confidence to those who may lack confidence or feel they lack ability.

7.
We aim to develop pupils’ knowledge of visual vocabulary and how to apply it when discussing works of art.

8.
Our aim is to use every opportunity to celebrate student work through display in the art room and around the School.

9.
We aim to show that art is practiced by both men and women and we seek to use the study of the work of past and contemporary artists to offer positive role models reflecting the skills of all humankind.
