Citizenship and PSHE

'Citizenship is more than a statutory subject. If taught well and tailored to local needs, its skills and values will enhance democratic life for us all, both rights and responsibilities, beginning in school and radiating out.' – Professor Crick, Birkbeck College.

Citizenship aims to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. We aim to help our boys become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights. We want to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, making them more self-confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom. By encouraging them to play a helpful part in the life of William Ellis School, the local community and the wider world, we hope they will be better prepared for adult life in a modern democracy.

Years 7 to 10 cover various aspects of citizenship (e.g. Being British, Conflict Resolution, Crime & Punishment, Europe, Human Rights and more) during their tutor periods. At Year 11, pupils study for a short-course GCSE, the main part of which is a coursework activity.
