What are The Key Stage Three SATs?
What are they?
In May you will be sitting a range of tests in English, maths and science to see how your reading and writing skills have improved since Year Six.
In English the tests will test your improvement and give you a final level in Reading [En2] and Writing [En3].
When are the English tests?
You will be sitting three papers:
- Your English Reading Paper is on Thursday, 10 May 2007 [MORNING].
- Your English Writing Paper is on Thursday, 10 May 2007[AFTERNOON].
- Your Shakespeare Paper is on Friday, 11 May 2007 {AFTERNOON].
What is in each paper?
READING PAPER
- Your reading paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long.
- You must read a booklet containing three long and linked text extracts in a range of genres and forms.
- You must answer approximately 15 questions on these texts exploring
language, meaning, form, purpose and reader’s reaction.
- You will be marked for:
- analysis of language and meaning
- textual detail/use of quotes
- exploration of themes and ideas
- exploration of structure and style
- personal response/opinion
- explaining how and why authors organise texts

WRITING PAPER
- Your writing paper will be 1 Hour and 15 minutes long.
- You will have to answer two question and you will not have a choice!
- You will have to plan and produce a piece of writing that could be:
- fiction/narrative/story
- non-fiction
- booklet/leaflet
- a speech
- a script
- a letter
- instructions
- You will be marked for:
Planning, organisation, spelling and grammar, correct style to fit purpose.
SHAKESPEARE PAPER
- Your Shakespeare Paper concentrates on Richard III.
- Your Shakespeare Paper lasts 45 minutes.
Marks will be awarded for analysis of:
- character
- ideas/themes raised
- the staging and stagecraft
- language/imagery/meaning
