AS Level Geography

Unit 1 - Changing Landforms and their management:

Which focuses on River environments and Coastal environments. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of the processes involved, the conflicts that can result with human activities and how these conflicts can best be managed.

Unit 2 - Managing Change in Human environments:
Which focuses on Rural environments and Urban environments. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of current issues in rural and urban areas, how these may inter-relate and how they might best be managed.

Unit 3 - Environmental investigation:
During the first two terms of the year pupils go on a one week residential field trip. Using data collected on this trip pupils develop their own small geographical investigation incorporating a variety of geographical skills such as map work, graphicacy, statistical analysis, etc. The project must not exceed 2,500 words.

Unit 4 - Global Challenge:
Which focuses on Atmospheric processes and Ecosystems under threat; Global population and migration issues as well as Globalisation and the global economy.

Unit 5 - Researching Global Futures:
Which involves the study of a physical topic such as living with hazardous environments; and a human topic such as Health and Welfare. Pupils undertake much of this unit through their own research and investigations.

Unit 6 - A synoptic assessment:
The final unit involves pupils making use of their geographical and decision-making skills of a topic which combines physical, human and environmental elements. Pupils receive a set of materials to study and become familiar with in advance of the exam.
