GCSE Physical Education
In addition to National Curriculum P.E. we offer a GCSE Physical Education course in Year 10 and 11. The aim of the course is to offer students the chance to improve their knowledge of techniques, skills and tactics used in sports as well as allowing them to learn about the body in more detail than KS3 Science lessons.
Key Features of the course:
The practical part of the course has the greater weighting for marks in the course (60%). It is composed of basketball, cricket, rugby, soccer, softball, volleyball, table tennis and fitness training. The practical elements are assessed via ongoing assessment (20%), analysis of performance (20%) and a moderation day for final assessment (20%).
The theory side of the course accounts for the remaining 40% of the total GCSE grade. It is split into 3 main areas of learning;
• Applied Anatomy & Physiology
• Safety aspects and Risk Assessment in Sport and Physical Activity
• Exercise and Training
Is GCSE PE for you?
Whilst GCSE P.E. is an attractive option for boys who may have enjoyed P.E. lessons in KS3, they must think carefully before taking the course. Being a top footballer is not enough to achieve a high grade.
Pupils considering this course should ideally have shown an aptitude in KS3 Science lessons (especially biology), and should be interested in all sports offered in the course and must be willing to put every effort into those sports.
Pupils who have taken this course in the past have found it a very rewarding subject and it is a great pathway to careers in sport.
