The Mill
The School is committed to providing residential experience for its pupils and students of all ages. We have our own semi-rural residential centre on the Surrey/Sussex borders in a small village, Forest Green, a few miles south of Dorking.
An old watermill and attached cottages have been converted to provide year-round sleeping accommodation for up to 32 pupils and 6 staff, with the usual services. We have added a fieldwork laboratory, a large classroom and a games room. We call it The Mill, which lies in an estate of about 10 acres of woodland, meadow and stream – virtually a wildlife reserve.
Almost all pupils attend a week's camp at the Mill, under canvas, in July, at the end of their first year in the School. There is fieldwork in Biology and Geography and also much sport and adventurous activity. We regard this as a most important part of our young pupils' first year experience.
At various times during the succeeding years, pupils go to the Mill for GCSE fieldwork, for intensive study weekends in a variety of subjects, and for work and master classes in music and drama. Sixth Form groups have revision sessions prior to A-Levels. The staff also use the Mill as a professional development centre, with residential in-service training courses.
The Mill is not the only venue for residential work. Our Sixth Form biologists and geographers regularly use other centres, where coast, mountain or fell are more appropriate for their work.
