Health and Safety Policy


Statement of Policy - Aims
To comply with the provision of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) namely:
• To ensure the health and safety of all those who regularly work in or visit the school.
• To have proper regard for their welfare.
• To establish a procedure for the regular review of policy.
• To make clear areas of responsibility and those who are responsible for them.

Responsibilities
(a) The Headteacher has overall responsibility as the 'Key Manager': day to day matters may be referred to the Business Manager, who also includes 'Site and Building' in his brief.
(b) Mr T Walton, the First Aid Advisor, will act in an advisory capacity in all matters relating to Health and Safety. The Headteacher has designated him the "Safety Advisor".
(c) The First Aid Officer, Mrs V Binks, is responsible for dealing with accidents; if she is not available, Mr R Nolan can help. People responsible to the
Headteacher for designated areas: "local contacts".
All Science Laboratories and Media studio - Mr D Croston.
Gymnasium, Changing Rooms, Boys' cloakrooms and toilets, Playgrounds and
Courtyards - Mr M Keeshan.
Rooms 30 and 31, Gallery Rooms 42 and 43, Library, Room 8 – Mr Beresford
O’Brien.
Staff Room, all ground floor teaching rooms, School Office and Library - Mr H
Feasey.
First Floor teaching rooms - Mrs A Schulte.
Music Rooms, Art Rooms – Ms Tracey Brennecke, Mr P Welsh respectively.
Assembly Hall, Dining Hall, all storage areas - Mr T Avery.
Corridors, staircases, exits, all departmental office accommodation and Sixth
Form Centre - Mr M Rose.
The Mill - Mr I Mitchell.
Workshops - Mr J Frerichs.
(d) All staff remain individually responsible for knowing and carrying out safety directives issued by the Government, LEA and Governors.
(e) All staff have a general responsibility. Hazards likely to affect anyone's Health and Safety or Welfare should be reported to the appropriate "contact" listed above or dealt with directly (eg by removing a hazard or locking a door).
(f) Form tutors have a general responsibility for their forms and should check the fire notices are always visible.

Inspections
(a) The Business Manager and/or Schoolkeeper will do a full inspection at least once a term.
(b) Those with specific responsibilities, will inspect their areas and give a report in writing to the Business Manager in time for reporting to the Governors' Finance and Buildings Committee.
(c) Heads of Department will inspect all rooms designated for use by their departments at least once during each calendar month when the school is in session.

All accidents or "near miss" incidents affecting Health or Safety should be reported to the First Aid Officer at the First Aid Room (i.e. Physics Prep. Room). These will be recorded and reviewed regularly.

Health and Safety Committee

(a) Terms of Reference
(i) To have a general regard for the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and the implementation of its provision.
(ii) To review inspection reports, reports of accidents or incidents.
(iii) To consider submissions from safety representatives.
(iv) To seek ways of promoting awareness of its work among staff, pupils and other users of the school's premises.
(v) To make recommendations to the Headteacher.
(b) Composition
(i) Convener: The School Business Manager
(ii) "local contacts" as listed
(iii) The First Aid Officer
(iv) The School Keeper or his Deputy
(v) The Catering Manager
(c) Meetings
At least once each term in time to report to the Governors' Finance and Buildings Committee.
Fire practices will be held regularly, usually once per term.
