School Health Service
The School Health Service is organised from the Child Health Department of the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust (020 7794 0500 ext. 5830). Our School Nurse is Bridget Evans. Her extension number is 135. She has a pigeon hole in the Staff Room and can be aircalled by ringing 020 7794 0500 and asking for aircall 051 B. Evans.
The School Nurse Team Leader is Helen Swarbrick who can be contacted on 020 7830 2440. The Professor of Community Child Health is Professor Brent Taylor.
AIM
The aim of the service is "promotion of good health and the prevention of ill health".
THE SERVICE
Today the School Health Service is the link between education and health. It has a major role in identifying health and social needs at an early stage so that school children are enabled to reach their full potential.
ROLE
Bridget Evans is a qualified nurse who works in close co-operation with the child, parents, teaching staff, school doctor and all the child health services of the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and the wider community. She is happy to be used in class through PHSE programme and will take referrals from any member of staff through the Head of Year if there are concerns about individual students. She liaises closely with the Health Education Co-ordinator.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Health Assessment Interviews – in both primary and secondary schools.
Health Promotion – individual and group sessions on varied health topics.
Referral – to clinics for bedwetting, dental, speech therapy, chiropody, opticians, family doctor etc.
Liaison – with parents, teachers, health visitors, social services, hospitals, psychologists, dieticians etc.
Advice and Counselling – to both children and parents.
Health Surveillance Interviews are carried out in Year 7: students will be weighed and measured; vision and hearing will be tested if there is/has been a problem and medical needs identified. Consent must be obtained to carry out an interview.
Students will have in-depth medical interviews in Year 9.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Almost 20% of all children have some form of special need during their school life, requiring either short- or long-term support. The school nurse has a vital role in the assessment and management of children with such needs. She advises and supports the child, parents and teaching staff.
IMMUNISATIONS
During each pupil's school life, necessary immunisations will be offered in the School.
Consent is normally required.
