Knut the Polar Bear was born last December in the Berlin Zoo.

His mother completely ignored him. The keepers decided that they should take him in, to care for him. But now a row has broke out in Germany. Many animal rights campaigners say it is unnatural for him to be cared for. They think it would have been better and more natural to leave him to die.

 

The Zoo bosses had no intention of putting him down. He is a healthy bear. Not only that, but Polar Bears are an endangered species. Keeping him alive would help raise numbers of them alive.
